Rode 40 miles of the course today. Dry dusty and very windy. Looking forward to the "official" ride next week.

That Linclon Mtn openspace looks interesting, I have not heard a word about it, maybe a place to explore.

The 876-acre Lincoln Mountain Open Space opened for hiking, biking and horseback riding on August 31,2013.   It's located at 7333 Jones Road in southern Douglas County, is .6 miles west of State Highway 83 on Jones Road. There's just shy of 7 miles of trails, all open to biking.  It's pretty nice because you can do a climb/descent on Lincoln Mountain and also ride through rolling grassland/caprock terrain.

That open space would be cool to run one of these rides through to weed out the real skinny tire folks but there are a lot of users, including horses, so it wouldn't be feasible for a large group.

Is there a place in Elbert to get water, or beer?

According to the Town of Elbert website there is a convenience store and a liquor store. The gas station is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. I beleive it's to your left when you get to main street.

There is a gas station on the north end of town, as well as a bar at the bottom of the hill coming into town. For those who need a porta potty there is one at the ball fields on the east side of the road.

Anybody have suggestions for tires for the AntiEpic 50? Recommend bringing a CX bike with CX tires, not roadie tires? MTB is overkill? What tire pressure?

Thanks

Depending on the road conditions, you'll find braking bumps, soft dirt/gravel, sand, etc. that would make running a road tire a bit tough. Normal cx tires would go a long way and fatter rubber even better [smile] I've run 32s out there, but also 40s.

I wouldn't say a MTB is overkill either... If you have fast-rolling tires that would be good, but not necessary. Lots of people use MTBs for gravel (and fat bikes, + bikes)

Yes, the Elbert Country Store/gas station is on North Elbert Road (the main drag that runs north/south). To get to the store, you'll have to turn left on Garfield Street at about milemark 26.3, go less than 0.1 mi. to N. Elbert Rd, turn left and head north about .15 mi., and you'll see the store/gas station on your left.

In my experience through riding hundreds of miles of gravel roads in Elbert and El Paso counties, the Continental Cyclocross Speed tire in a 42mm width works great.  Good air volume to soak up the washboard, good flotation for the loose, soft sand, and an overall light, fast tire due to the file tread.  I'm pretty sure that the 42mm width Cyclocross speed is no longer made, but any tire in similar weight and width with not too agressive tread would work great. Here's a picture of the Cyclocross Speed's

My guess is that the roads will be kind of moist with some mud and maybe snow in spots.  And there is a decent chance of rain (and wind).  CX tires over road tires for sure.
