I just felt compelled to post here and say that Saturday morning I received my very first oval chain ring ever. I always wondered about these things and couldn't resist taking a dive (especially since I got the thing for $28 out of their scratch and dent pile). The whole reason Wolf Tooth sold it so cheap was because the "made in the USA" was slightly going over the edge. So anyways I must say that while I can't say that this ring has turned me into a pro rider, I can say I definitely felt like my pedal revolutions were smoother and less choppy. I also felt like I could carry the proper cadence longer without shifting up to the next cog. I was all prepared for the first half hour to feel "weird" and "different" until my legs got used to the oval ring but to my surprise right out of the chute I felt nothing odd at all. All in all things just felt smoother and crisper running this ring. Maybe I am just imagining this stuff but I am sold and will continue to run oval in the future.

Going back to round rings you definitely notice the dead spots in your pedal stroke. Love me some ovals!

I'm running a 38 round chainring at the moment. If I went to an oval should I go 38 or 40?

They claim because of the mechanical efficiency you can go 1 size bigger but I can't verify that. Due to the extreme hills we have here in SW Iowa, I took my 38 round off and put this 36 oval on. There seems to be a huge debate online about whether Wolf Tooth and the rest are just imitators of Absolute Black. Absolute Black claims theirs are the best and have the most research and the others buy their rings and then "copy" them. It kind of irks me when I read that stuff. Comes across as arrogance although I am sure Absolute Black makes some pretty nice stuff. I like the fact that Wolf Tooth is made right here in the USA 1 state above me. I wondered myself if I shouldn't go with a 38 oval but since I found this in their scratch and dent bin I didn't have the luxury of picking a tooth count. That being said I notice a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in the feel of my pedal strokes. After one good 53 mile ride so far, I think I made the right choice. I am in love..[biggrin]

I started running a 42t Wolf Tooth elliptical ring last fall on my single speed and I'll never go back. Round rings just feel weird now.
