Currently I have WTB Horizon's but I'm curious if anyone has experience with the Elwood or Byway. I ride 1/3 pavement, 1/3 gravel and 1/3 hardpack so some added tread would do me well.

The tires are so new I doubt anyone has both. But there's always the host site. [thumb]

Don't think the comparison here is a 700x40 Elwood to a Byway. The 650b version is also 47c. It's a matter of tread and grip, not volume.

Sorry, my original post should have been more clear. I am asking about 27.5/650b. Both the Elwood and Byway are appealing to me. Both are 650b x 47, have added tread for traction. WTB is super easy to set up tubeless and I've had great service from Fred Slate in the past. The Terrene is lighter and has an interesting tread.

Both will have that added cush[smile] I've googled for reviews and read the ones here(Thanks GT and others!).  Just looking for that nudge to push me off the fence!

Love my Terrene's.  Not sure the tread pattern on the Byway makes sense to me as replacement for the Terrene's.  But... I'm little and bike on dirt/clay and pavement... your results/beliefs may vary.

I just picked up a set of Elwood's to replace my Maxxis Ramblers. Only have the rear on, 2 rides complete. One 60, other 67, mix of gravel (Indiana limestone) and pavement. Roll great on pavement and seem less twitchy on the gravel. I'm 187 lbs and try and ride aggressive. Give them a try!

Volume is much more important than tread for gravel and hardpack. In fact you don't really need tread at all. Tread will only help you in loose/muddy stuff. Gravelkings (650B x 1.75") are great tires and a great value but technically not tubeless.

This is exactly why I don't get the Byway (though I haven't seen/felt one). My Terrene's really suit my needs when rides are mainly trail/rougher jeep roads/forgotten forest roads with lots of loose rocks/branches/muck.

For normal dirt rides, I just like/want/use slicks.  Last year I lived on 700c x 32 LGGs.  They were perfect for most rides.  This year... it seems that tubeless pari-motos will live on my main wheels until worn out (then Gravels, I think), and the Terrene's on the back-up set, coming out when the ride is actually rough.  

But... I live in a place where this works.

So I just had a full test ride with the Byway on pavement, gravel, technical single track and high speed double track. They are totally legit! I'd say if the OP has the experience with the Horizion the side knobs on the Byways just made cornering stability on gravel or dirt that much better without affecting pavement feel. Not to say that the Elwood is a bad choice, which I would probably go with if I was still living in Colorado amongst all that singletrack where MSOish style treads rule.

The light. Used tube to get it formed to rim but need to change over to tubeless this week.

I just installed Elwoods ( tough ) on my Slate as a back up tire to my G-Ones(40mm) ...the fit on the Slate is extremely tight with the Elwoods on the back. A bit worried about using them now if conditions get a bit wet/muddy, but the ride is so comfortable and a good tough tire for the DK coming up.
How much, or when does too little clearance become a concern ? It does not rub...but it is close...

As long as you aren't riding really muddy trails tight clearance usually isn't a problem.  Just make sure when you stand and "mash" on the pedals during a steep climb that the tire doesn't rub.  Usually when standing you will get some frame and wheel flex that might cause rubbing with low clearance tires.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like it will be a plus with either the Byway or Elwood. Fortunately I have plenty of room with the Horizons. Happy riding!

I can tell you from personal experience, doing DK200 in the worst possible conditions (2015), that you need plenty of clearence with the Kanza "peanut butter" mud. I ran 700x38 tires which were a little tight in the rear, but had plenty of clearence on the front fork .... Or at least I thought so .... And even the front packed up just pushing the bike through the mud. I ran 700x36 last year. The handling was fine, with good clearance for mud. New bike this year will allow me to run a much wider 650 tire, but unfortunately, due to health issues, I've had to bail out of DK. Plan to return next year.

Just updating this old post. I got a great deal on the Byway and went with those. Can't wait to hit the dirt and gravel this weekend!

Ebay had a flash discount on bike stuff for an evening so I jumped on it. I have a about 100 miles on fine gravel and hardpack and these feel so smooth with good traction in the corners. I think the cush is a combination of the Ti frame and tires, with more coming from the tires. No loose, chunky gravel yet. Still playing with pressure between 30-40 psi. 

The tires mount up extremely easily on WTB and Stans rims. They got stuck on the Stans rims and were hard to remove. No problem on the WTB rims. Using Notubes sealant - works fine. I am trying Orange Seal next as I ran out of Notubes.
