Recently started exploring all the gravel forest service roads in the local Cherokee National Forest (Eastern TN).  Love my new Litespeed T5Gravel.

Lovely Drakkar! Too bad Rawland no longer makes them and of all the frames/bikes they make, it's the only one I would buy.

Here's my old Raleigh Peak converted as a "minicrosser" (with 26 inch wheels) in its full muddy glory. December mud is like a stubborn paste that never comes off until Spring... Raleigh Peak.jpg

Had a great mixed terrain ride this weekend. Started on swoopy single track, then climbed a gravel rode to finish on asphalt. 45 miles and 3500' climbed. The over sized down tube and bottom bracket were appreciated on the climbs and the carbon/fiberglass seat stays smoothed out the ride. Running tubeless on the 35mm Clement USH allowed me to climb the 16% grade on the gravel climb without slipping.

This is my 1989 Bianchi Axis; I am the original owner. I bought the used 1992? Rock Shox 700c Mag21 fork about two years ago - it was originally on a Bontrager CX bike.

Craig,
I'm looking at the GT Grade also. What other bikes were you considering? What tipped it in the Grades favor? Is it a really good multi-purpose bike?

Walt,

I sold my full suspension mountain bike and have been riding a titanium road bike for commuting. I missed being on the local single track and could only get 25mm tires on my road bike. So I started looking for a gravel bike that would allow me to ride from my house, connect up single track and fire roads and then ride home on the road.

The GT Grade is an excellent choice. It was 19.1 lbs without pedals. The oversized down tube and BB make sprinting responsive. The tiny seat stays flex enough to smooth out the terrain. I was able to climb a gravel road at 14% grade without slipping because I went tubeless with 35mm Clement USH.

I love the 14 degree flair on the drop bars. It is the most comfortable I have ever been in the drops. I added Bar Phat gel under my bar tape for a little more Cush as well as a Coble Gobler seat post. These have allowed me to ride longer on rough surfaces without as much fatigue.

On technical single track, it is point and shoot. I was out this past week and the only time I lost traction was an off-camber curve that was coated with soggy leaves. My knobbies on my mountain bike probably would have gripped, but that is the only time I noticed any deficiency. I climbed every hill and flew down the swoopy single track just as fast as I used to.

The best part was riding back to my house on the asphalt, downhill hitting 38 MPH corners just as stable as could be!

I am very happy with the bike.

Here's mine.  Pulls double duty as a commuter, using tubeless 28's.  In another month or two I'll have a *much* nicer bike for non-commuting duties.  I've added fenders since these pics were taken.

Hi Walt, 

Only one ride so far, but think I'm going to like it.  Aluminum is a departure for me, though.

Yeah, the stock bike was tempting, with a full Sram build, and their house brand stems/bars, etc seem quite nice, and the total package seems like a great value.  But I did go with the frame set instead.  Put it together with components I had, from Ebay, and scored some nice things at our annual swap, too.  Still working on wheels.

Redline post mud (1024x768).jpg So, I'm mostly a CX racer which accounts for the CX rig.  Eventually I'll need to get a Ti or Steel rig as when the moisture come, mud and carbon chain stays don't mix very well.  She weighs in just a hair over 16lbs and climbs and handles super soft.  The racing geometry tends to take its toll on > 50 mile rides.  N+1 right?  Oh what will my next frame be?(gotta fit 42 on the back right?)  Loving the CX1 drivetrain!

I just picked up this DB Haanjo Trail this week. I was able to get it out on a decent ride that involved four gravel sections and two categorized climbs. So far, so good.

This is my cross bike pressed into service as a gravel bike. Mild upgrades include:
- Cheap-o Nashbar carbon fork replaces the boat anchor original
- Bontrager ergo bars
- Sturdier than stock wheels (A23s) to stop me breaking spokes
- 41mm surly Kinards at 45psi (I keep another set of wheels with 37mm slicks for the pavement)
- minus two teeth on the small front ring, plus two teeth on the cassette (short cage really limits me here)

It's nothing special but it gets the job done. However, I reserve the right to update this post with pics of my new gravel bike if I finally pull the trigger this week [wink]

Here's my Ogre build. It has Shimano XT derailleurs and Shimano V-brakes. Special detail: it has an extended Syntace VRO MTB stem to keep the handlebar low. That way I could avoid installing a dropbar and keep max control. I use it for MTB and (windy) gravel rides.

Here's my current stead, nothing fancy but she's been good to me. Took her out for a ride Saturday at one of my favorite trails.
There's still snow on the ground in some parts of Mass. I did get to catch the sunset over one of the ponds that has a beaver house in its middle.
