Headed down with a couple buddies in two weeks.  We all have 33s.  I know that things can be soft/sandy and bigger tires would be better, but that's what we have to work with. We are looking to get two 30-60 miler rides in (one per day).  Can anyone suggest good routes/scenery?  I've been told higher elevation = firmer terrain.  We are looking at driving up to Pioneer Town one day and following the same route as the event takes to Big Bear.  Hoping to find some options right out the front door of place we are staying at in Rancho Mirage as well.

Steely--
I'm curious if you did this route? I have my eye on it for a trip this spring. I ride road down there frequently but the gravel options seem limited and I'd love to find more.
Thanks!

We did half of it. The first couple miles after you leave asphalt we’re unridable sand which required pushing. We honestly almost thru in th towel, but once it started going up things improved and scenery was amazing. Unfortunately the “beach” took so much out of us (energy, but more importantly, time). We ended up turning around 15 or so miles in. I will say that we did this late fall and conditions were as dry as they could be. Perhaps after a big rain the first sandy bit could be easier.

...but the next day, we swapped out our gravel bikes for Mtn and road the Palm Canyon Epic... it was all the time!!!
