Dear fellow gravel grinders,

I have decided on the 43 Gravelkings, and was wondering if they would do fine/excel on a 25 mm internal rim width? I am a bigger guy (180-190 lbs, 6'4"), and my only experience is a 47 WTB Byway on a 23 internal rim width, which runs great for me. I am in doubt, because the 43 Gravelking SK's were orginally called a 40 mm tire, and according to the safety charts of Mavic and the likes (http://engineerstalk.mavic.com/en/the-right-tyre-width-on-the-right-rim-width/) I should not put a 40 mm tire on a 25 mm internal rim width. The only options within my budget are a 20mm internal rim width and the 25i one

What internal rim width do you prefer for 40-45 mm tyres?

They'll be fine, don't over think it. We used to run 2.4s on 17mm rims.

Agreed, they will be 100% fine.  For reference I used 42mm WTB Resolute on a 26i Enve M60HV at LandRun; A-O-K all the way!

I ran these tires on i25 rims and they were perfectly fine tubeless. Not a problem to run these tires on a rim with this width at all. It will have the effect of slightly flattening out the "crown" of the tire, but for gravel travel where I am at this is actually a good thing.

I run GK 43's tubeless on Velocity Blunt SS (26.6 inner) with no problems.

Should be more than adequate - I run 40s on 22mm internal which is a huge rim to me!

Just curious if anyone has measured the installed width of the 700x43 Gravel King SK's?  I've read the smaller 38's actually measure closer to 40.  I'd like to go with the wider 43's but am hesitant to order a set as I'm afraid they'll be too wide on my Roker.

FWIW I have a few sets of 700x40 Clement MSO's and these seem to measure at 41 mm on 20.5 mm wide rims (external width) and 42mm on 23 mm to 25 mm rims.

I was talking with Panaracer directly about their SK tires and widths and this was their response:

"On our Stan’s Avion wheels [21.6mm internal], the 35c measures 37mm wide, the 38c measures 40mm, and the new marked 43c (old marked 40c) measures a true 43mm."

Take that for what it's worth. You said your Clement's measure 41mm on a 20.5mm external width rim? Or is that the internal measurement. And with the 23-25 mm rims, is that your internal or external width?

No clue about the 43s, but my 38s on Hed Belgium + measure over 41.  I am not sure, but I think my rims are around 21 internal

Thanks for the info. Let's see what others have to say.

The rim dimensions are all external.  The 20.5 mm are Mavic CXP33's and Open Pro's. The other rims are what came on my Roker and wife's Renegade.

To the original post - I have many thousands of miles using 38 to 42 mm tires on old (retro?) Mavic rims which are 20.5 external (approx. 17 mm internal).  I've never had a problem with the tire being pulled off the rim but at lower pressures the tire does flex and wallow more.

Regards,
Greg

My 43mm GKSK measure 44+ on Stan's ZTR Crest rims, 20.8mm internal. The 38mm SK measures 41+ on the same rim. That's with 30 - 35 psi.

Very helpful post. You’re talking on a 700c wheel, correct?

Most gravel/CX wheels are going to measure 19-21mm internal. I’m running Roval SLX w/ 20mm internal. Yours are almost a mil wider and put the tires to a good size.

I was back and forth on the 43 GKSK for dry conditions, but idk if I’m going to now. A 43 would fit for dry conditions but anything bigger will rub. Looks like I’ll just run with the 38 GKSK and then a 42 Teravail Cannonball!

GK SK 38 on WTB i19 (19mm internal) measures 40.5mm or 1.6".
GK SLICK 38 on the same rim is about 1.5"

My 43 SKs measure 42mm on 20mm ID rims at 30psi. The 38s sit at 40 on the same rim. If I pump them up higher they grow a bit.

Never use external rim width, always internal. The wall thickness of the rim can differ so it's not really a relevant measurement.

Yes, a 700c wheel. I'm running a 43 up front and a 38 in back due to clearance issues. I just bought a Fuji Jari and while the 43 does clear in the back it's not great. Fuji says a max 42 so the SK 38 measuring an actual 41+ does the trick nicely.

I just mounted a pair of Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x43 on 22mm internal rims and they measured up exactly 43mm. FWIW, I also have a pair of Panaracer Gravel King SK 650bx48 mounted on 24mm internal rims and they have grown to 50mm.
