Curious if anyone here has done or has more information on the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) Bike Marathon. Looks to be an interesting event and from all the Youtube videos I have looked at, it seems to be mostly pavement and doubletrack (forest paths). Anybody have any experience and know how much technical single track etc is in it? Considering this as a destination event for next summer and just want to know what to be prepared for. http://www.ultra-bike.de/

Your impression / information with regards to the character of the roads / tracks is correct. Even though there might be slight modifications to the route there is usually little to no singletrack involved. Most of it are unpaved forest roads with some occasional jeep track. With 5.000 participants anything else would end in totally destroyed singletracks especially when it rains or has rained prior to the event.
You might want to ride it on a gravel bike although so far only a few people do. If you are a capable descender you will be faster IMHO. That's at least my personal experience on those very "roads".

Hi Trippertim,

I live just up the road from Kirchzarten and took my son to the kids competition at the event this summer. I can't recollect seeing any Gravel bikers but I guess there could have been a few (it's a big event). From my impression of the riders I doubt the course could be really technical and usually when there is something really gnarrly, there's a chicken run to the side. From the amount of riders, I doubt whether there will be that many single track bits but if that's what you are after then you can find loads of tracks up here to try. We had our first Black Forest rally for gravel bikes this year which was well attended and might interest you: https://www.facebook.com/HIRSCHSPRUNG.BIKEREISEN/posts/1899391013434837

Thanks for the feedback!! Sounds like it is about what I was expecting. The wife and I are putting together our plans for next year, so I'll have to keep this one and the gravel rally on the list of potentials! We'll see what she says :-)
